2009 Hopes & Dreams Racquetball Tournament : 2009 Hopes & Dreams Racquetball Tournament - October 15-18, 2009 - Formally known as the "Slaying the Beast" Tournament This tournament was a fundraiser to help raise money for Cancer Research in HOPES of finding a cure and to help fulfill DREAMS for those where research is too late. Warren Bailey and Michelle Bruchhauser are the driving force behind this event which usually draws the most participants of any of the Anchorage Racquetball tournaments. This was the second tournament of the Alaska Racquetball Season and as such some players were still a little rusty while others were shedding their rust, Sunji Spencer of Fairbanks was once again in the Men's Open Finals where he defeated (1) Jesse Keaveny in a 11-10 tiebreaker proving his win last month in the season opener was no fluke. In the Men's Open Doubles (1) Brandon Cuaresma & Jesse Keaveny took the win over Robert Bailey & Nick Hand. A BIG Thank You to all the sponsors who donated items and Cash for the Silent auction plenty of funds were raised for this very needy cause.

In the Men's Open singles Brandon and Jesse found themselves pitted against each other for the title and like always this was a very interesting battle to say the least, Game 1 went to Brandon 15-13 even after taking a hard shot to the side of the head on an errant shot by Jesse, Game 2 went to Jesse 15-7 with both players making some great dives along with great shots, In the tiebreaker both players were a little streaky and Brandon had worked up to an 9-6 lead when Jesse fought back to tie the game at 10-10 both player served 3 times for the Win before Brandon guessed wrong and headed toward the right side of the court leaving Jesse an unguarded left side backhand shot for the 11-10 win.

For all of you who missed the Men's Open Final with Brandon Cuaresma vs Robbie Gunther you missed a GREAT MAtch!.. Robbie came out firing away and his Splat shot it was working in the 1st game which he took 15-9, In game 2 Brandon had Robbie running with his "Touch Shots" to the front court and good passes to the back court even forcing him to call what Brandon likes to call a "Tired Timeout", Brandon took game 2 15-9. Game 3 was filled with Great shots from both players along with some fantastic retrieving, The score stayed close through out this fierce 3rd game and both players were pushing HARD for the WIN but that didn't stop them from showing plenty of Sportsmanship to each other over turning a couple of close calls by the Referee. Brandon went on to take the tiebreaker 11-9 to become the first Men's Open repeat winner of the 2008/09 Alaska Racquetball season.

2007 Alaska State Doubles : WOW!!.. There is no other word that I can think of to describe this years State Doubles Tournament. In the Men's Open the number 1, 2, and 3 seeded teams were all knocked off in the first round, The semi final matches came down to 2 teams from Anchorage and 2 teams from Fairbanks. In the first match up the young guns of Fairbanks Matt Howell & Sunji Spencer defeated Ken Williams & Robert Bailey 15-9, 15-5 and in the other semi the Father & Son Team Ben & Brandon Cuaresma kept their Cinderalla story alive by coming back from a 10-4 deficit in game three to defeat Shane McAfee & Jim Hage of Fairbanks to set up a Final no one would have imagined, In game 1 of the final Ben and Brandon were hanging tough 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, keeping the team of young HARD SHOOTERS close Ben used his half lobs and forced weak returns while Brandon did as he always does, ran almost everything down and used both his touch and power shots to keep the pressure on, as the game went on Matt & Sunji started adjusting to the game plan and went on a scoring spree and closed out game one with a 15-9 win. As game 2 started it became clear very early on that Matt & Sunji were on their way to becoming the 2007 State Open Champions as Ben & Brandon were defeated 15-3. The Mixed Open had 4 teams that competed in a round robin with Leda Evans & Jesse Keaveny going 3-0 to take the title. We also had 6 Women B/C players who competed in a blind draw 2-Round (Round Robin) 1st Place: Jenny Philip & Jackie Seiffert, 2nd Place: Carloyn Knowles & Amanda Philip, and 3rd Place: Gina Strawn & Anglee Brooking.

2002 Racq Attack : The 2002 Racq Attack Racquetball Tournament The Alaska Club - East Anchorage, Alaska March 13-17, 2002. With the Alaska State Singles tournament less then a month away this tournament let everyone know just where they stand. The "Young Guns" in the Mens Open division put everyone on notice that they are a force to be reckoned with. Robby Gunther took the title with a 11-4 tiebreaker win over Brandon Cuaresma, This was the youngest Open Final in Alaskan history (average age 22). State Singles should be very interesting indeed. REMEMBER if you were forced to move up to the next higher division of play "THIS SEASON" because you reached the 150 point total, you may still play in the lower division at the State Singles Tournament (Only) after which you will once again be required to play in the higher division.
